SPONSORSHIP
PROGRAM
We are blessed each year to have some dedicated alumni and friends who
are assisting some deserving children
in our school. The sponsor offers to pay all or part of the
tuition for a child whose family circumstances would otherwise prevent
him or her from attending our school. The cost of tuition is becoming
greater and greater and many families find it impossible to handle. Our
Sponsorship Program helps these families to continue the Catholic
education of their children. Some sponsors choose to have contact with
the child; others choose to remain anonymous. In some cases, through the
Matching Gift Program, a sponsor's contribution for tuition actually
makes it possible for two children to continue in our school.
If you wish to become
a sponsor, please indicate this on the enclosed envelope. Full
sponsorship is $3200; partial is $1600. If you would like to discuss
this program, please contact Mr. Richard Meller, Principal, at (718)
892-3234.
Your sponsorship truly makes a difference!

BURKE HOUSE DINNER
Tom Whelan is a
1960 graduate of St. Helena's School. He served in the
Vietnam conflict, spending a
year in Cam Ranh Bay and Tuy Hoa. After returning from the army and working for the next several decades in the computer
field, he decided to visit
Vietnam in 2002. His experience in visiting the country which he had
once considered the enemy
had a profound effect on him. He was particularly struck by the
plight of street kids in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City).
"I return to America with a
vivid sense that I had to
do something," he said. That "something" became Burke House, an
organization dedicated to helping Vietnamese street kids
improve their lives. (Burke
House was named after Tom's
mother, Rita Whelan whose maiden name is Burke). His trip to
Vietnam in November, 2002 was the first of successive "Thanksgiving
trips" each year since. He hosted Thanksgiving dinners for children and their
families, assisted a
Vietnamese order of sisters in their work with children, and invited
family and friends to join
him in this undertaking. Tom's work was recognized in
The Daily News several
months ago in an article entitled "Vet Returns to Vietnam To
Aid Kids." Further
information on Burke House, including the News article, is available
on the website at
